  • Lightship Chesapeake and Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse (2012/5/18)
    Marking the entrances to the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays for almost 40 years, the Lightship Chesapeake features a masthead light, foghorn and bell which helped guide mariners to safe harbor, while its anchors held it in position defying the most violent storms and waves. Learn about the oldest "screwpile" lighthouse in Maryland while observing this historical structure.

    Picturesque Fort Washington sits on high ground overlooking the Potomac River and offers a grand view of Washington and the Virginia shoreline. Today, only one silent gun stands behind the masonry wall - the last armament of the powerful fort that once guarded the water approach from the Chesapeake Bay to our nation's capital.     Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge was specifically created to protect essential bald eagle nesting, feeding, and roosting habitats along the Potomac River. Visitors can view the refuge along two trails, one through woods and one in Great Marsh.

    This 100-acre nature sanctuary, located in Prince Frederick, Maryland, was acquired by The Nature Conservancy in 1957 to protect the primeval beauty of this cypress swamp. The Battle Creek cypress stand, unusual this far north, is presumed to have established itself sometime in the last 10,000 years. Walk along the quarter-mile boardwalk trail to listen to nature's harmony of calling frogs and songbirds, and with quiet patience you may even catch a glimpse of some of the abundant life supported by this wetland.

    Virginia State Senator Richard H. Stuart of Montross and Va. Delegate Barry Knight of Virginia Beach have filed bills for introduction in the 2012 Virginia General Assembly which could set the stage for total extinction of the Menhadden fishery in the Chesapeake. Menhadden, which form a basic foundation of the Chesapeake Bay's food chain have been increasingly subject to overfishing, and in November, 2011, the Atlantic States marine Fisheries Commission took the first steps towards establishment of science based "catch limits" to preserve the species.
